What the name means
Tung tung is onomatopoeia for the sound of a kentongan being struck, and sahur is the pre-dawn meal Muslims eat before fasting during Ramadan. The name is literally the drumbeat that announces that meal. Wikipedia adds that tung also means rumbling in Sundanese.
Where it came from
Indonesian TikTok creator Fernanda Bagas Indrastata, known as Noxa, generated the image with DALL-E and posted it on February 28, 2025, the day before Ramadan began in Indonesia. Wikipedia records the prompts he used, asking for a pentungan sahur with a face and legs. He posted it under the Indonesian Anomali AI character trend, which runs alongside Italian brainrot rather than inside it.
Why it spread
He outgrew the trend that carried him. Radio Republik Indonesia, quoted by Wikipedia, credits the absurdist humor Generation Alpha and Generation Z reward, where the more absurd a thing is the more entertaining it becomes. Hungary's prime minister posted a video of a dancing 3D model, and a Fortnite skin followed in April 2026.
A note for parents
Sahur is the meal Muslims eat before dawn during Ramadan, and in Indonesia people have long walked the streets striking a kentongan slit drum to wake neighbors for it. Wikipedia states that the name imitates that drum. This site explains the practice plainly because it is a real tradition worth knowing, not a punchline.
